Notes

Naval Units and Formations:

Port/Starboard:

Positions: I am also going to reference Gineipaedia.com for this. There are some positions where I have a fundamental disagreement with their translation. For those I am going to go with my heart.

Galactic Federation: The fan subbed names often differ from what Tanaka meant to use. 銀河聯邦 had the furigana "USG", which I assume means "United Space Guild", but since that does not sound as pretty as the fansubbed "Galactic Federation", I will be using "Galactic Federation" instead.

Calendar: The universal calendar, I titled it "UC". In the book, it's "SE" for "Space Era". A part of me wants to stay true to the text and use "SE" but honestly... really??? I used Galactic Federation instead of USG, so I think I'll also use UC instead of SE. I placed the year before UC in this fashion: 734 UC. I did this because UC was not derived from Latin, so following the examples of BC, CE, and BCE, I thought it was only fair if UC followed the numbers too.

幕僚/參謀 (General Staff Officer/Strategist):  The two positions are interchangeable (or maybe not...).Tanaka sometimes uses 幕僚, and sometimes uses 參謀. After discussing this with TK Chia, we decided that using general staff officer (GSO) for both will be less confusing.

Sailors? Soldiers? Whaaaah?: In Japanese and in Chinese there is one generic term for underlings in all military branches. What made things even more difficult is Tanaka never specified which branch of the military everyone is in. Presumably they only have one branch and presumably that's the navy? Who knows. This generic term is generally translated into "soldier", but my husband was in the US Navy, and when I asked him how someone in the Navy would feel about being called a soldier, his only answer was, "No!" So, there you have it, "soldier" is a no-go. I decided I will call them “servicemen” and “spacemen.”

Kaiser or Emperor?
Tanaka noted the furigana " カイザー " next to all of the 皇帝 he want to read "Kaiser", which only happened when people verbally referred to "Kaiser Reinhard," but then I found a sentence in Book 1 Chapter 3 where Rudolf referred to himself as "kaiser," so... all the emperors in this book will be called "kaisers."

Terra or Earth?
Tanaka noted "テラ" next to all of the "地球", so although it pains me to do so, poor Earth will be referred to as Terra in the entire project.

Senpai (先輩) and kōhai (後輩): I’m taking the advice of Wikipedia and translating them into “senior” and “junior.”
